Today we’re excited to release our first annual Identity Security Outlook Report — a survey report that provides a clear snapshot and analysis of security leaders’ top identity security concerns and priorities for the year.
We hear from security leaders every day who are facing identity security challenges that go far beyond traditional identity priorities like passwords, authentication, or ease of access. With access environments continuing to sprawl and bad actors continuing to invent ways to exploit identity as an attack vector, security teams are putting their focus and resources on improving identity security.
The goal of the Identity Security Outlook Report is to get a comprehensive understanding of how the security community at large is handling modern identity security challenges, as well what financial and cultural hurdles they’re encountering as they look to implement solutions. We surveyed over 500 director-level or higher IT and security professionals across the US to find out what they’re concerned about, what they’re prioritizing, and what obstacles they’re facing as the identity security landscape evolves.
Key findings
Most leaders have learned firsthand just how important good identity security is for their business — 77% of respondents reported instances of cyberattacks or data breaches at their org in the past year due to improper or overprivileged access.
Complicated, often hybrid access environments are the norm — 47% of those surveyed cited complexity of existing systems as a top access management challenge, and 76% said they’re managing hybrid systems.
While implementing access controls could potentially impact productivity, nearly half of respondents claimed that risk reduction takes priority over productivity concerns.
The good news is many leaders are optimistic about the effectiveness of modern approaches to identity security — like moving to zero standing privileges (ZSP) — and most cite adequate or increasing budgets for addressing identity security.
